Hello 10/11 Youth Ensemble members. Thanks for joining us this year. In our first rehearsal today we got to know each other a little bit and then took a whack at Horace Silver’s “Nutville”. Everyone did a great job reading and soloing on the tune and I think it’s going to be a keeper! Here’s a couple versions to check out if you haven’t done it already. The first is from Silver’s Blue Note recording of the tune. The second is from a live performance with a different version of the band where they stretch out a little. I think Bennie Maupin had been checkin’ out some Eddie Harris at the time!

I passed out some other tunes to check out; Joe Henderson’s “Black Narcissus”, an arrangement of Coltrane’s “Equinox” and Craig got a copy of Dave Holland’s “Juggler’s Paradise”. Some tunes the group suggested they wanted to do were “I am the Walrus”, “September”, “Watermelon Man” and “Bloomdido”. Got any other ideas? Send ‘em to me!
