I’ve been very fortunate lately to have been involved in making some great music. I’ve been behind in keeping this spot up to date but if you’re ever wondering where I’m at just hit the gigs link up top. That calendar is always up to date. Thanks for visiting. Here’s what’s up in the next few weeks.
Saturday, Feb 18th – Donkilo! – The Barley Pub, Dover, NH 8PM - After a smoking show up in Ashland the other night, Dave Kobrenski’s Donkilo! Afrofunk Orchestra will hit it at the Pub. We’ll be pumping out the grooves with Jared Steer, Mike Rossi, Jim Dozet, Dave and myself. C’mon out for a beer or two and feel the funk!
Sunday, Feb 19th – Matt Langley/Tom Robinson – Rudi’s Portsmouth, NH 12 Noon- Tom and I have been playing together at Rudi’s fairly regularly. It’s always a good time making music with Tommy. If you’ve never been, come on in and enjoy Rudi’s welcoming atmosphere, have a wonderful brunch and enjoy some good music. We’d love to see you!
Sunday, March 4th – Dave Surrette “Mando Eclecticana” – The Barley Pub, Dover, NH 8PM - Yup, you read that correctly…David Surrette is putting together a group for this night with Steve Roy, Jon Ross and myself. Should be a hoot. Dave’s planning on a night of swingy, blugrassy, jazzy tunes done off the cuff, session stylee. Should be fun and it’s always better when you’re there.
That’ll do it for now. Go out and support some live art, music, drama, whatever! You’ll be glad you did.

Monday November 28th – Russ Grazier Quintet – The Press Room 8PM – The PMAC Jazz Faculty makes a monday hang at the best jazz club in New England. Should be a good time so come on out for jazz, suds & good vibes!

My school year starts a little later than most. This week has been catch up time with all the students that I didn’t get a chance to work with over the summer. It has been great to see all of you and spend some time talking about the time that has passed since our last meeting. Some have played some music, some have heard a lot of music, some have gone out to shows. As long as music is a part of your life, I’m good. It would be wonderful to work with people that practiced 8 hours a day and then went out and played a 4 hour gig every night but I’m still looking for that person. It’s not me! There’s someone I know that could turn into that person. We’ll wait patiently and eagerly to see and hear what happens! Here are some upcoming shows that I’ll have two hands in…
Sunday, September 25th – Rudi’s, Portsmouth, NH – 12 Noon – 3PM – I’ll play the Rudi’s brunch with pal Jesse Feinberg. You may not know Jesse. You should! He’s an excellent pianist and we should have a great time playing tunes for your dining and listening pleasure. Bring a horn too. Rudi’s is a great place to get wonderful food and drink and they are dedicated to presenting music so stop in often!
Sunday, September 25th – The Press Room, Portsmouth, NH - 5-9PM – The Press Room’s 30th Anniversary Celebration kicks into high gear tonight! Three Tenors? How about FIVE!?!? Fred Haas, Ted Casher, Ralph Norris, Charlie Jennison and yours truly! If you’ve played the room before (?!) you can get in without paying the cover. BRING A HORN! PREFERABLY A TENOR! We’re going to have a BLAST! There has been an extra hour added this evening strictly for extra TENOR CHORUSES!
Monday, September 26th – Donkilo! at The Barley House, Concord, NH – 6-10PM – Come on out and DANCE to Donkilo’s hypnotic groove. We’ll start levitating at 6PM and keep the room suspended until 10 PM or until you bump your head on the ceiling, whichever comes first, okay!?!?!
Friday, October 7th – Combo Sabroso at The Kittery Dance Hall, Kittery, ME 8-11PM – There’s more dancing in your near future. You didn’t know that! C’mon out to the Kittery Dance hall to experience one of Boston’s best latin dance groups on the best dance floor you’ll experience any time soon! Alex Alvear is back from Ecuador and we’ll have the regular crew. This will be a hot night so get your tix early!
Sunday, October 9th – Jim Dozet Group, The Barley Pub, Dover, NH 8-11PM – Guitarist Jim Dozet has put a group together to play some of his jazzy original tunes as well as some of his arrangements of “new standards”. Should be a great night of music, especially if YOU are there!
Monday, October 10th – David Tonkin Group, The Barley House, Concord, NH, 6-10PM – Good pal Tonky and the boyz in another night of deep space exploration at the barley! This is officially my second night in the “barley tour” and what a great way to do it; with two of the finest guitarists in New Hampshire! C’mon out and celebrate monday with us and let us know what you want to hear too! I know Brandon (via Seattle) wants to hear Chris Speed’s “Mexahata”…so we’ll play that request and yours too!
Enough for now. Thanks for stopping by and be sure to go hear some live music or catch an art show or take in a play or heck, put on a play!

Seriously! These dudes won’t be there, don’t worry. They have stopped by the last two years to check on us in the spring! If you’re coming over, call me first so I can be sure to have a towel and a beverage of your choice ready for you. Now, I know it’s been kinda chilly, but we’re from the Northeast. We’re used to swimming in cold water, right?! Due to all the leaf skimming we did in the fall, the cover came off nice and easy. I didn’t even have to yell at anybody!
So, the lawn mower is cutting nicely, the Scythe is slicing the dandelions off by the hundreds. The chainsaw is ready to turn all the trees that fell this year into firewood. Bring it on!
Just one more thing, got a call from a dude the other day that is going to come over and take the Zool for a spin. Seems he’s tired of having landscaping companies tear up his lawn and he’s ready to do it himself…on a ZOOOOOL! I’ll keep you posted how that turns out.
Now, despite all the chores and such, there’s the business of keep those twelve little notes in order, or out of order, depending on the context. Here’s a rundown on the next couple of weeks worth of beat and note herding…
Monday May 30, 8PM – Pandelis Karayorgis Sysyem of 5 – The Lily Pad, Cambridge, MA – Pandelis is a wonderful pianist, composer and bandleader and this is an all too rare appearance of this quintet. Featuring Jeff Galindo on trombone, Jef Charland on Bass, Luther Gray on Drums, Pandelis on Piano and myself on saxes, this is a fun lineup that makes Pandelis’ music come to life. He writes specifically for this band and the music is GREAT. This will be a great night.
Friday June 3, 9PM – Color/Roger Goldenberg/Mike Marchand – The Dance Hall, Kittery ME – This is going to be a VERY fun night. The concept came together casually. I saw that painter Roger Goldenberg has worked with Pianist Mike Melvoin up at Dartmouth and mentioned to him, we should do that sometime. He agreed. Color had worked with Mike Marchand on a few occasions and we said, “We should do a gig together.” He agreed. So, We talked to Drika Overton about her new Dance Hall in Kittery as a possible (perfect!) venue. She agreed. So it’s happening, baby. Don’t miss it. More here under the link at the top of the site and you can buy tickets there too.
Monday June 6, 8PM – FTET – The Press Room, Portsmouth, NH – Yeah! Finally an FTET gig! Mike Effenberger on Hammond B3 and spiritual direction, Jim Rudolph on drums and beatitude, Nick Mainella on reeds and radicality, and myself on reeds and righteousness. We’ll visit many moods and you’ll really want to visit them with us! This is a FUN band.
Saturday June 11, 7PM – Combo Sabroso – The Dance Hall, Kittery, ME - Matt Jenson’s band kicks off the Grand Opening of the Dance Hall in Kittery. Only the best dance room in the area, THAT’S ALL! Alex Alvear, Pablo Bencid, Manolo Mairena and Angel Subero (I think) will be kicking it latin style. You somply must dance on Drika’s new floor…it exquisite! Get tix early, this one will sell out!
Monday June 13, 6PM – David Tonkin Quartet – The Barley House – Concord, NH – THE FIRST BARLEY HOUSE OF THE SUMMER!! We’ve been counting down all year and it FINALLY HERE, right?!?!?!? David Tonkin on the guitar, Don Williams on the Bass, Timmy Gilmore on the drums and hopefully all the dudes and dudettes who are home from school for the summer visiting and sitting in. Should be a good time. Especially if you’re there!
Monday June 27th, 6PM – DONKILO! – The Barley House, Concord, NH - Dave Kobrenski’s slammin’ African dance band adds a whole new slant to Jazz mondays at the Barley. We’ll do our best to reign it in for the first set but sometimes the groove carries us away! Dave Kobrenski on kamalen’goni (african harp), fela flute and djembe gets the groove headed to Africa and then Jared Steer on Drums, Mike Rossi on Bass, Scott Solsky on guitar and myself RIDE THE WAVE! Good times, join us!
Okay?! So, you’re going to come take a swim, and you’re going to support some ahhhht this month? EXCELLENT! Thanks!

Yep, 262,000 miles on that baby and still waking up raring to go at the twist of it’s ignition. This is quite possibly the best car ever manufactured…a 1999 VW Golf with the 2.0 engine. Dang, this sucker keeps taking a beating and coming back for more. Here’s to…50K more?!
What other milestones? Well, Mr. Taylor Matthew Langley just turned twenty two years old. I can’t believe my “kids” are in their twenties. Kind of makes me feel like my odometer is getting up there! I can’t say how much we enjoyed our vacation with them this year. It was truly a pleasure to be with both of them at the same time and have so much time to spend together. Love you Erin & Taylor!
Here’s how I’ll rack up a few more miles on my literal and spiritual odometer in the next few weeks.
Monday, April 4th, 8PM – COLOR at the Press Room, Portsmouth, NH – Jamie, Chris and I take another trip into the colorsphere at our home away from home, the Press Room. Can’t wait to float some notes over those fat grooves and creamy, leslie soaked chords. Come on in please.
Thursday, April 7th, 8PM, Grupo Mofungo, One Longfellow Square, Portland, ME - Andres Espinosa’s Grupo Mofungo is making more noise lately. This will be the full group with Mark Tipton and I on Horns, Andres on timbales and percussions, Dylan Blanchard on Congas, Raphael Freyre on Bass and Gary Wittner on guitar. This band has a great repertoire of latin dance music so join us for some fun!
Sunday, April 10th, 10AM – Jazz Service, 2nd Christian Congregational Church, Kittery ME – Join us for the monthly jazz service at 2nd Christian Congo. Reverend Brad Hirst will set your mind and heart in motion and music director Mike Effenberger will bring it all to life musically. Jim Rudolph and myself will join in the fun. Come on in and check it out!
Sunday, April 10th, 4PM, JOSA with Grace Kelley, Eastman, Grantham, NH – The finale of the JOSA season brings Grace Kelley to Eastman for an afternoon of great music. Should be a good time for all but get your tickets NOW. This will be a sellout for sure!
Monday, May 11th, 6PM, David Tonkin Quartet at The Barley House, Concord NH – Jazz and wine night at the Barley House in Concord with David on Guitar, Don Williams on Bass, Tim Gilmore on Drums and Myself on the saxamaphones. C’mon in for some great jazz and beyond as well as wine and dinner specials. A tasty combination!
Sunday, April 17th, 8PM, Mike Walsh Group, The Barley Pub, Dover, NH – Drummer and fellow Shaker Road teacher, Mike Walsh likes to play some challenging music and puts together some great groups for the cause. Tonight we’ll have Scott Solsky on guitar and Jesse Stern on bass and it should be a blast. Scott Mason at the pub is dedicated to providing a venue for live music and has been for quite some time now. Show some love and join us!
That’s enough odometer spinning for the time being. More great music coming up too! I’ll keep racking up the miles and pouring out the notes if you keep your ears and minds open and get out there and support some live music, art, theater, dance, and more! Thank you!

I love my family, I love my family, I love my family! Did I mention….yeah, vacation was a joy. The whole fam was back together for about a week and it was wonderful to catch up with Erin and Taylor. They’ve grown in so many ways, It’s mind boggling. I would be happy to be just like them when I grow up but there doesn’t seem to be any danger of that happening anytime soon. Love you guys, can’t wait to hang again SOOOON!
So, it’s spring in New England, right? I mean, I know it doesn’t happen until the 21st but things are looking good. The snow is less than two feet deep and the driveway is only a partial skating rink! That’s good enough for me. We’ll probably have another blizzard or three or maybe just a few drenching monsoons, but I feel spring! What better way to celebrate than with some LIVE MUSIC! Here’s some of what I’m up to, c’mon out or go see someone else, just commence to consuming some POSITIVE VIBES BABY!
Friday, March 11, Matt Langley & Tom Robinson, Rudi’s, Portsmouth 6P-9P – Tommy and I rarely get a chance to play in a duo setting but when we do, it’s a treat. In case you haven’t had the pleasure, Rudi’s in Portsmouth is a cozy restaurant and bar with a great menu, great vibe and a grand piano over in the corner of the bahhh. Come on in and soak up a note or two while enjoying the martini of your liking.
Saturday, March 12, Donkilo, Penuche’s, Concord, NH 9P-12P – Whassup with all the Donkilo sightings? Welp, this is a funky bunch of fellas engaged in freeing up your feet african stylee. Dave Kobrenski is the center of attention with his compositions, Fula flute, 10-string kamale ngoni, and djembe playing and Jared Steer, Mike Rossi, Jim Dozet and I complete the trance inducing groovernaught. Get on up and DANCE!
Sunday, March 13, Jazz Service, 2nd Christian Congregational Church, Kittery ME, 10A-11A – Rev. Brad Hirst will deliver another thoughtful service while music director Mike Effenberger leads the choir and the trio in response to the proceedings. This is a wonderful way to start a Sunday. You really should join us!
Monday, March 14, David Tonkin Quartet, The Barley House, Concord, NH, 6P-10P – After a month off – quartet wise mind you, David and Donnie serenaded the lovers on valentines day in feb to the delight of all, naturally! – The Tonky show returns to the Bahhley. Expect just about anything…musically…from the bandstand and fine food and beverages from the kitchen and bar respectively. Guests frequently join us on the bandstand. Yah just never know!
Friday, March 18, Aporkalypse Now/Chris Klaxton Group, Buoy, Kittery ME, 9P-? - This is going to be a blast and quite possibly one of the more memorable shows on the seacoast! The Aporky’s are a group of creative sorts hell bent on presenting original music with an improvisational bent in a larger, and growing, group format. Jinny Peiffer, Mike Effenberger, Nate Therrien, Nick Mainella, Zach Lange and myself all contribute tunage and whatnot. We’ll have a new bone player along on this one too rumor has it. As if that weren’t enough, Klaxton will be in the house with a group from Miami to let us hear what he’s been up to down south. This will be a great night of music and will probably sell out in a hurry. Don’t miss out. Stake your claim!
